Joseph Kimogele’s entrepreneurial journey began at an early age in e-commerce, where he excelled in online sales of computers and phones on social media. During his international business administration studies in university, he diversified his expertise by brokering car sales and showcasing his artistic talents through successful paintings.
Transitioning to the tech industry, Kimogele served as Regional Sales Manager at SERMO, specializing in ERP software for schools. His strategic contributions played a pivotal role in establishing SERMO as a leader in educational technology.
Building on this diverse background, Kimogele delved into the mining industry. Growing up with a mining engineer father, he gained valuable experience and insights. Kimogele’s journey in mining continued in Chunya, Tanzania, where he serves as a Senior Special Operations personnel at Apex Resources Ltd, the largest gold mining company in Mbeya region. His experiences in optimizing operational strategies, streamlining processes, and enhancing efficiency were instrumental in shaping his vision for NIWA MINERALS CONNECT. Additionally, Kimogele pursued a course in mineral economics, augmenting his expertise in mining projects and appraisals, further enhancing NIWA’s capabilities in the mining sector.

Dr. Karim Baruti is a distinguished expert in mining engineering and mineral economics, bringing over 30 years of academic and industry experience to Niwa Minerals Connect. He currently serves as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Dar es Salaam’s School of Mines and Geosciences, where he teaches and supervises research in mining systems, mineral project evaluation, and surface mining operations.
His academic journey includes a Ph.D. in Mining Engineering, specializing in mineral economics and surface mining cost modeling, alongside an M.Sc. in Mineral Economics & Environmental Management and a B.Sc. in Mining Engineering.
Dr. Baruti’s research explores cutting-edge themes such as:
- Surface mining economics and mineral cost modeling
- Rock mechanics and predictive geotechnical analysis
- Mining policy reform and national resource optimization
- Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM) systems and impact evaluation
His published work includes studies on:
- Cost modeling based on Run-of-Mine grade and tonnage data
- Predictive strength analysis of Tanzanian granite formations
- A pioneering MSc thesis on how national variables affect gold mining returns, placing Tanzania within the high-cost/low-benefit bracket — a benchmark for national mineral policy analysis.
Beyond academia, Dr. Baruti has played a key leadership role in Tanzania’s mining policy landscape. He has:
- Led the formation of several Regional Miners’ Associations (REMAs)
- Chaired the Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS) Committee on Mineral Standards
- Acted as an advisor and mentor to national stakeholders in the mining ecosystem
He is also the Subject Editor for Mining & Mineral Processing Engineering at the Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology, where he helps shape academic standards and supports the publication of leading research in engineering and mining sciences.
